Dell Precision 15 5000: Fast System With A Middling Battery

Needless to say, Dell computers have been on a roll. With new affordable systems being rolled out practically a daily basis, the latest machine coming out of the woodwork promises a lot more of the same, but with an additional streak of style and sleekness combined with the performance of the ages. This system is called Dell precision 15 5000.  A slim laptop with a robust exterior and powerful performance to boot, this machine obviously6 deserves a deeper look to see if it is really worth it at a burning price of $2603.

Dell Support checks out if the machine is really worth it

Dell Precision 15 5000 (5510) is a fine machine sporting a more than an adequate 4k display, intense chassis and a premium look. With an addition of USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3, performance is a promise this machine never reneged on. When you look at its closest competitor, the Lenovo ThinkPad W540, you realize that it extends far above and beyond in both the areas of display and performance. Now, without further to do, let us dig a bit deeper and see if the machine is really worth it.

• Design: One of the most blatantly highlighted features that try to justify the gargantuan price tag is the premium feel and look of the system. With an aluminum exterior that extends 0.66 by 14.6 by 9.27 inches, it definitely has that kind of metallic feel quite right. However, this metallic exterior comes with an added burden in the form of approximately 5 pounds. This weight makes this system significantly weightier than its closest competitors. Once you are done smoothly furnishing over your hand over this hardened yet smooth exterior, you will notice a slick keyboard made up of a robust carbon fiber. The keys give off kind of a Chiclets-style; solid and with good feedback and resistance. Moving further down you feel a coarse yet somewhat smooth touchpad. With a smooth finish yet sturdy makeup, responsiveness is an almost expected trait. The placement of the webcam is an odd one though. Instead of being centered on the screen, the peripheral is kept at the bottom-left side of the bezel, accentuating just above the hinges. This might be an odd placement, but this placement is also an advantage to the design as it helps in keeping the top bezel so thin that the screen appears to be from edge to edge.  But with the entire exterior, there is still catch, its compact nature doesn’t bode well if you seek to open up the system and perform some upgrades of your own. These machines are amazing, yes, but it is downplayed by its compact chassis which requires specialized attention.

• Features: Let us now move on to the real meat of the system, the internal features. Before we move on to the generic internal structures that entail a powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Core Xeon processor complemented with a NVIDIA Quadro graphics processor, a 512 GB solid state drive and an upgradable ram up to 16 GB, you must realize the purpose of this system. This system accentuates on two things, design and display. Therefore, let us look into the display. The display is a 16.6 inch, 4k Ultra high definition display, which many of our experts feels to be the best they have ever seen. With a resolution that goes up to 3840 x 2160, the display is further complemented by more than 8 million pixels. The result, a sharp and well-contrasted image with extremely vibrant colors with an almost photorealistic 4k video. Additionally, the screen has laid much of its emphasis on touch capability, which is extremely good. Other features less emphasized but important features include keyboard backlight with two brightness levels, a webcam with 720p capture capability, and multiple USB ports made for fast file transfer and responses.

• Battery; Let us be honest here, the laptop is meant to be workstation made for professionals with an emphasis on vanity, you should not be expecting a lot in the way of battery life here. Anyway, the battery life is around 5 hours and 34 minutes, which is not particularly disheartening when you look at it. Its closest competitor comes at about 4 hours and 30 minutes.

The bottom line is, Dell precision 15 5000 (5510) is indeed an optimal workstation, but it is primarily meant for professionals. While it’s ridiculously clear 4k display is absolutely and eye-candy, along with its ultra-fast SSD, the downside comes from the extensive compactness of the system and a mediocre, yet adequate battery life.
